The Shakes, Nietzsche Tours Basel, The Landscape of Swiss Wine

Broadcast on:
14 May, 2019

The Shakes are a five-piece outfit from London whose unique serving provides old fashioned rock and roll alongside down and dirty blues, all with a modern indie twist and dressed up in a 1960s suit. With a strong musical calibre and enigmatic frontman, the band promise a raucous show. They came in to tell us about their music and their upcoming shows this week in Bern, Basel and Liestal (on 18th May). In Basel, go and see them at Red Rocks on Thursday 16th May and O'Neill's Irish Pub on Friday 17th May! Listen to the interview again here.

Andrea Bollinger joined us in the studio to promote her tailor-made Basel Nietzsche (and other local luminaries) tours. Andrea is also the author of the book, "Nietzsche in Basel", and was a collaborator in the editorial comments of Friedrich Nietzsche's collected letters. She is working on the collected works of Johann Jakob Bachofen (famous for his quirky writings on matriarchy). Her tours can be customized to your specific interests and needs: whether you are a lone history buff or hosting out-of-town sight-seeing guests, or looking for activities with your corporate team. Nietzsche spent ten years of his adult life working in Basel as a University of Basel professor of classics and as a teacher at a prep school. You will walk past the house he lived in on Spalentorweg while Andrea explains Nietzsche's time in the building with his flat-mates, drinking and philosophizing. It took Basel until the late modern era to put the commemorative plates on the buildings. Contact Andrea at a.bollinger@bluewin.ch to find out more and arrange for your tour.  Listen to the interview again HERE.

Bergli Book's Richard Harvell came in to talk about Sue Style's new book "The Landscape of Swiss Wine". It introduces readers to Switzerland’s wines and the extraordinary landscapes that give rise to them. Wine writer Sue Style explores how vine cultivation has shaped the landscape down the centuries, and introduces the reader to Switzerland’s best winemakers. The book can be purchased at the Swiss Wine Days 2019 on 16 and 17 May 2019 at Markthalle Basel, where 27 winegrowers from all six wine regions in Switzerland will personally present their wines. Listen to the interview again here.
