Padraig Rooney, Basel Bake-Off, The Beauty and The Beast, Health Spots # 3.2 - Children's Health

Broadcast on:
1 December, 2015

Padraig Rooney, a previous guest of the English Show, was in the studio to tell us about his latest book, "The Gilded Chalet".  The book is a collection of true stories about historically significant luminaries and their travels and experiences in Switzerland.  Part detective work, part treasure chest, The Gilded Chalet takes you on a grand tour of two centuries of literary history and scandal and shows how Switzerland transformed the cultural landscape.  And if that's not enough to get you interested, there are quite a few stories specific to Basel, from which Padraig read an excerpt during his interview.

Look for his book at Bider & Tanner in Basel or at your favorite e-Bookseller.

Also in the studio with us: Sandra, president of the International Women's Institute Basel (IWI). IWI is organising another Basel Bake Off, with cakes and puddings galore. The Bake Off is on December 6th at the Markthalle. Judging starts at 10:30 and cakes are available for sale from 11:00 - 14:00. Not only do you get to treat yourself, but 50% of the profits will be donated to the Surprise Strassenchor charity.

Our correspondent Stephanie Németh-Parker went backstage at the Musical Theater to interview both the "Beast" and the "Beauty" in Disney's production of The Beauty and The Beast. They told her about playing these characters, putting on the make-up for the Beast, and exploring Basel. The musical will be running until December 13th, 2015.

The English Show is proud to participate in Radio X's 'Gesundheitsspots'. This is a series of short public service announcements designed to demystify Swiss health services in the listener's native language. This week's spots give an overview over children's health. To listen to them again, click here and here.
