Sue Style, Rob Stuart

Broadcast on:
10 February, 2015

We're always delighted to have Sue Style on the show - this time to talk about the tradition of pre-Lenten/Carnival foods, cue for a load of wondrously rich and stupendously fattening deep-fried pastries and other goodies that were traditionally scoffed in anticipation of a lean time during Lent: Fasnachtskiechli, Fastewähe and so on. Sue also told us about Fasnacht staples such as Mählsuppe (burnt flour soup - sounds awful, tastes delicious, we promise!) and Zibelewaie (onion tart). Best of all, Sue shared her delicious recipe for a wicked ice cream gateau in which Fasnachtskiechli, ice cream, whipped and chocolate sauce all play a part. Yummy!

And our cinema expert Rob Stuart came in to tell us about the newest releases: for example 'Honig im Kopf' (Capitol), starring Til Schweiger and Dieter Hallervorden. Then there's 'The Imitation Game' with Benedict Cumberbatch and Kiera Knightley, the story about a team of cryptographers cracking the German Enigma code during WWII.

One for the kids is 'Big Nero 6: Baymax', while the lush and garish 'Mortdecai', starring Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow, is a curious romp featuring a rich art dealer who encounters Russian and British secret services whilst searching for a lost painting that holds a code to hidden Nazi gold.

Also look out for 'Big Eyes', starring Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz, directed by Tim Burton; 'St.Vincent', starring Bill Murray; and 'Birdman', with Michael Keaton in a tale of the unexpected virtue of innocence.

Our music theme this week - what with Valentine's Day looming - was, of course, love songs. But not just the obvious ones. We hope.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love

Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 You

Tegan and Sara - Closer
