Public Transport Offers Ride-Share; FC Zürich Wins Championship At St. Jakob's; May Day Demo Vandalism

News For 3 May 2022

For those wondering how to get home late at night without having to drive, a new offer, "Mobilisk" is being piloted by Basel's public transportation provider: the BVB.  Similar to Uber, the App based pilot-project is scheduled to run for 6 months, having started this past weekend.  If you've passed by heavily trafficked tram stops recently, you've probably already noticed the new signs for the service featuring a stylized image of a green van incorporated into the travel plan kiosk at the station.  The service is only available via Smartphone App between Friday 10:00 PM and Saturday 4:00 AM.  On the plus side, the cost of a ride is capped at five francs, however, the service will not deliver you door-to-door.  Instead, users will be directed to the nearest aggregation point, which is also a tram stop, and you can disembark anywhere on the pre-planned route.

Sunday's May Day demonstrations in Basel left a wake of defaced buildings and a few broken windows.  Typically a celebration of International Labor marked by peaceful demonstrations of solidarity, this year's event saw the windows of banks and commercial enterprises along Freiestrasse and Marktplatz vandalized with paint. According to the official police department account of why people were allowed to damage property despite police presence, the response was that escalation into physical violence was avoided.
