TENNIS NEWS: Roger Federer advances to the U.S. Open quarterfinals

Federer defeated 13th seeded Jurgen Melzer 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

Basel's hometown tennis star will face Robin Soderling in the next match.

Federer owns a 12 win and 1 loss career record against Soderling, however that one loss came last June in Roland Garros, which ended Federer's streak of 23 consecutive Grand Slam semifinals.

Federer is looking to avenge that defeat.

Federer has won 44 of his past 45 matches at the U.S. Open and has reached his 26th consecutive Grand Slam tournament quarterfinal.

BASEBALL NEWS Therwil Flyers split doubleheader with the Zurich Barracudas.

The Flyers came out swinging in game one.

Taka Oshima blasted a triple and Chris Blackbee hit a single in the first inning, putting the Flyers ahead 1 run to nothing.

The Flyers added 3 more runs in the fourth inning thanks to 3 stolen bases and 3 errors made by the Barracudas.

The Flyers extended the lead with timely hitting and won the first game 12 runs to 3.

Game 2 was a game to forget.

The Flyers' offense struggled at the plate, and was unable to score any runs.

Meanwhile, Chris Blackbee and Stefan Koller struggled on the pitcher's mound as both allowed a combined 10 runs.

The Flyers remain in first place with 20 wins and 3 losses.  The team is looking ahead towards the playoffs which will begin next Friday.

FOOTBALL NEWS: FC Basel defeats Neuchatel Xamax 4 goals to 1.

This match turned into the Alexander Frei show.

Marco Streller put FC Basel on the board by scoring the first goal at the 26 minute mark.

Alexander Frei contributed with another goal for Basel 10 minutes later.

Frei recorded his second goal of the match after 52 minutes of action.

Frei put the game out of reach at the 65 minute mark by giving himself his third goal and putting FC Basel ahead 4 to nothing.

Xamax spoiled the shutout attempt by finally scoring thanks to Gohou's goal at the 78 minute mark.

FC Basel is currently in 2nd place of the Super League Division.

Baseball News: Therwil Flyers improve to 19 wins and 2 losses.

The Therwil Flyers defeated the Zurich Challengers 10 runs to 9.

The Flyers took an early three run lead in the first two innings thanks to timely hitting.

The Challengers struck back in a big way by scoring 8 runs, and seemed poised to run away with the match.

The Flyers scored 4 runs in the 7th inning, and two more in the bottom of the ninth, which brought the game into extra innings.

The Flyers won the match thanks to a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the tenth inning.  

This victory has improved Therwil's record to 19 wins and 2 losses.

The Flyers will face the Zurich Barracudas this Sunday.

TENNIS NEWS - Roger Federer drops to number three in the world.

The 16 time grand slam champion started the season on top, but was overtaken by Rafael Nadal in June 7th after the French Open.
Federer's loss to Tomas Berdych in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, caused him to drop another spot.
This is the lowest Federer has been in the rankings since November 2003.
