Democrats Abroad - Liz Voss & Ben Stewart; Anti-Racism Network Basel - Akeem Salaam

Broadcast on:
3 May, 2022

Liz Voss and Ben Stewart from Democrats Abroad Switzerland (Basel Chapter) joined us in the studio to help us understand their organization and how it can support prospective American voters. Traditionally, mid-term elections (coming up later this year) are a harbinger of change to the distribution of power in the United States, and this year is no different - with the political stakes higher than ever. For Americans living abroad, the Democrats Abroad provide registration resources (for those affiliated through residency with any US political party, in any US State, and any district from which citizens can vote), information links to issues-related topics, and information for those looking to volunteer. For those living abroad that think their votes don't matter, consider that the number of Americans voting in the 2020 US Federal elections exceeded the margins of victory in a few of the swing states. Also in the studio tonight was Akeem Salaam, a key person at the Netzwerk Anti-Rassismus Basel (Anti-Racism Network Basel). Akeem and his team of 10 people work to provide assistance to those affected by racism. The Network can provide legal assistance, counseling and advocacy; education and training; information; and online resources in 5 languages, with different cultural backgrounds. Starting May 3, 2022, the organization has kicked off the "Action Days Against Racism" featuring discussion events, trainings and support groups that will take place throughout the upcoming year. Most importantly, Akeem encouraged those that have experienced racism to report it - Swiss statistics woefully underreport individuals' experiences, and therefore prevent the necessary resources from being allocated.
