The brocantes run from around 7am to midday. If you're hungary while buying your treasures there are vendeurs selling hot, fresh crepes and plenty of cafes open.

It is free to enter the old town and see the goods which line the streets.

TO GET THERE: Take the motorway A35 from Basel to Mulhouse, then the A36 direction BELFORT.

TIPS:

1) If it's your first visit to the Brocante go early so you can find your way around the town and get a car park.

2) Make sure you empty your boot (or truck for Americans) of your car so you can carry all your new old tresures!

3) Take some euro coins with you as A36 is a peage ( cost is 2.80 Euros on the peage in either direction) as at 6th March 2011.

4) If your French is good enough haggle the prices down. I do everytime and have a 90% success rate in getting a price reduction.

5) If you buy large items you may be stopped by Swiss customs at Basel. So have a receipt on you for the purchase price - just incase you have to pay duty.

6) Some of the antique stores there do deliver into Basel.

7) Watch out for fakes or reproduction antiques. They turn up everywhere in the world and I've seen a couple at Belfort.

8) The latest you should leave Basel to be there is 10am...but that will only give you about an hour at the brocante, and the best things will have sold by then!

Have fun and take a souvenir back from your stay in Europe! Cheers Kiwi Jon.
