Hotel Bookings Plummet; Health Department Takes On Tiger Mosquito; Police Rescue Ducks...Again, Part III

News For 19 May 2020

The latest news for hotel occupancy was released - and its not a pretty picture. Compared to April 2019, bookings for the month were down 88%. Hotel operators attribute the decline to an absence of foreign guests. By the end of the month only 39 hotels remain open in the city, 19 having closed down in March, and 5 more during April. It goes without saying that the lack of guests is a direct result of travel restrictions resulting from pandemic response rules.

if you're annoyed by the high pitch buzz mosquitos make which inevitably wakes you in the middle of the night, prepare for armageddon.  Health authorities are warning that the tiger mosquito strain of the pest continues to expand its home to parts of the Basel region.  The name is suggested by the stark white and black stripes on its legs, and like the Murder Hornets which just landed on the west coast of the United States, these insects are the most aggressive variety.  Health authorities suggest removing any still water containers from back yards and gardens to reduce the mosquitos' habitat.

Last week we reported on ducks nesting in the balconies of the police station in Claraplatz and the hijinks which ensued when the police and fire departments were involved with rescuing and relocating them.  It seems the brigades responsible are quite busy these days as they were once again summoned to accompany a wayward family on the A2 highway last Friday evening.  Traffic was diverted and slowed down until the momma and baby ducks were shepherded to the nearest rest area.
