Christine Gerber Rutt is the brain behind "koo - ki - kascht - li" - a 'Zine packed with her observations and stories on an ex-pat's life in Switzerland. The mini-magazine is published four times a year and provides restaurant reviews, shopping tips, and humorous anecdotes. The Summer 2008 issue includes useful information on "How to Bury a Bird in 5 Easy Steps." More info and samples can be had at http://www.babyslings.ch
Andreas Rumpel and Iris Reichlin are the brawn behind SightBikes. A guided bike tour in a small group is a great experience you shouldn't miss. With SightBikes you will discover the ambiance and culture of Basel while undertaking a gentle physical activity. The tour takes about 3 hours and leads through the city centre and also along the beautiful promenade of the Rhine. The round trip is flat with only a few gentle gradients, so it can be completed comfortably by everyone. Information and bookings at http://www.sightbikes.com
Rob Stuart, our regular contributor and film reviewer, fills us in on what's hot in the world of cinema in Basel. The Euro 08 football championship has given many cinemas breathing room to close down and renovate. Twelve cinemas remain open for business, providing a great refuge from the steaming city streets. Rob has nothing good to say about SATC and only has eyes for Fellini at the Stadtkino. 8 1/2 and Satyricon have been dusted off and rolled out for the more intellectual moviergoers. Listen to the show for more keen insights!

When doing yoga laughing is probably the last thing you would think of doing, unless you're like me and the only stretching you do is reaching for a beer from the fridge. Well leave it to Mrs. Crocodile aka Colleen Dunkel to come up with a Laughter Yoga class for the masses. The Laughter Yoga events are given in English, German, French and Italian for businesses, associations, corporate events, conferences and workshops for groups from 10-500. Laughter yoga reduces stress and improves health through laughter and breathing. Workshop attendees report sleeping better and fewer sick days. Sounds like a win-win situation better health and lots of laughs. Visit www.mrscrocodile.com for more information.
This year is the 15th anniversary of the Stimmen Festival and this years line up is full of heavy hitters. The Neville Brothers, Paul SImon, Macy Gray, and Leonard Cohen in his only concert in Germany are just a few performers at this years festival which takes place in Germany, France, and in Switzerland. Michaela Stoll and Birgit Degenhardt two organizers from the festival gave us the low down on everything happening. There is also Taranta Festa-Viva Italia, a 3-day event July 11th to the 15th at the Roman Theatre Augusta
Raurica. Over 150 artists from Southern Italy will be wandering the grounds during the day performing spontaneous acts, and each night there will be a different concert featuring traditional Tarantela. Antonio Infantino on Friday, Eugenio Bennato on Saturday, and Nidi d'Arnac a mixture of electronic beats and Tarantela on Sunday. For tickets and showtimes, and locations visit www.stimmen.com
Resident food and travel expert Sue Style has added meteorologist to her job title, as she assures us that good weather is coming soon. This week she gives us tips on a few great restaurants that have gardens to enjoy a good meal in. In Basel: Veronica (right on the Rhine, in the Rheinbad Breite) - feels like
you're floating on the water and you can take your togs and go Rhine
swimming too, if the weather ever got nice again...Tel. 061/311 25 75,
Pavillon im Park in Schützenmattpark - not been there but sounds a lot of fun, Tel. 061 322 32 32, Noohn, Henric Petri-strasse - just done up their little garden at the
back (was there at lunch) which looks v. good - Asian fusion food,
stacks of people, buzzy and fun. Tel. 061 281 14 14, www.noohn.ch. In the Alsace: Studerhof in Bettlach has huge, wonderful terrace with views out over
the Jura, sandpits for the kids and a place to tie up your horse if you
arrive on horseback - good steaks (and brilliant frites), choucroute,
asparagus + tarte flambée on Thursday evenings (tho probably not
outside) and moules and frites on Fridays. Tel. +33 389 40 71 49, Aux Deux Clefs, Bettlach - lovely old Alsatian timbered house, beams
and tiny windows and sloping roof. Small terrace/garden - food quite
inventive, sensible prices, people used to be at Couronne d'Or in
Leymen. Tel. +33 389 40 65 75, and in Baden: Hirschen, Weil/Haltingen - lovely old 1740s house with beautiful garden
at back, big trees, shrubs, box hedges, nice little tables dotted
around - gutbürgerlich food, rösti, veal chops, asparagus etc. and a
warm welcome, Raube, Blansingen - just about to reopen, under new management -
gorgeous little vineyard village house with tiny garden, pretty fancy
food and fancy prices but worth a visit.

With all of the focus being on the Euro 2008 these days, the English Show has taken it upon ourselves to focus on something other than football. ART! So put down that remote control, go to these 2 exhibitions, and get some culture. Besides, England, Ireland, and Scotland didn't qualify for the tournament this year. Better luck next time!
Australian Artist Neil Kelly has an exhibition featuring roughly 50 pieces of his work. This includes Chinese ink paintings, and some figurative works. The ink paintings include calligraphy pieces and classical subjects. The calligraphy is a homage to a great teacher of modern calligraphy Gu Guan, and consists of the nine characters that describe his "3 steps of modern calligraphy"
a model of life-long learning.
The figurative series includes work in pastel, chalk and charcoal. Some sculptural works in progress are also on show and two aquarelle abstract landscapes. The exhibition is open Monday - Friday 2:30-5:00 pm and on Saturday the 14th from 11:00 am - 4:00pm. The exhibition runs through June 12th at Rheinsprung 12 Basel, which is the small street leading from Schifflande to Munsterplatz. See you there!
Lucia Masu is showing her recent works on paper "Under The Skin" at the Artwall Summer Exhibition at Centrepoint. The vernissage is this Thursday the 12th from 6:30pm - 8:00pm. Born in Sardinia, Lucia studied painting and Art restoration in Sassari and Florence, and worked in London, Geneva, and Fribourg before moving to Lusanne and Bern to recieve her Masters in Art Therapy. After attending a workshop at the Bindu Art School for Leopracy sufferers in Chennai India, she stayed and became a voluntary Art and English teacher at the Don Bossco primary and secondary school there. Lucia says living in different places and cultures has had a profound effect on her work. Centrepoint is located Im Lohnhof 8 in Basel. For more info visit www.centrepoint.ch or call 061 261 2002.
There will be an open Al-Anon meeting on Sunday, 15th June 2008 6-7pm, Schweizergasse 23 in Basel (2 tram stops from the SBB station). Al-Anon is a Self-help group helping friends/families of alcoholics. The meetings are free, and small donation welcome for room/literature.
