Noted artist and illustrator, Jooce Garrett will exhibit his varied artwork this Spring at Centrepoint, in the Lohnhof. His artwork including nudes, adverts, portraits, and bookjackets have won numerous awards over the years.

A Vernissage will be held Thursday, March 4 at 6:30. All welcome.

The Basel Tango School will be offering an intensive course for beginners during the festival. Course leaders of EF01 are Kaspar Fischer & Lorrena Bonavia, who are motivated and sensitive teachers with clear and careful teaching methods.

March 10th will be the place for "Expedition in the Uhrzeit", located at the Natural History Museum. This workshop will take the kids on a time-warp into the primeval forest in the middle of Europe. Using research and educational games, kids will discover how the primeval animals lived. This workshop will begin at 2pm and end at 4pm. Salsameneo is a leading dancing school in Basel, with studios at Just Dance, Kuppel and Bar Rouge. We have met with one of its English-speaking teacher, Patrick Brunner, who has given us great advice on how to start learning salsa. No partner is needed when you sign up for lessons, a little time for practice and a good pair of non-rubber soles shoes (to spin without injuring yourself) are about all it takes to start...

Salsameneo's approach to teaching entails learning to feel the music from within, not just learning a bunch of technical steps. Group lessons are available (sessions of 10 lessons for 180 chf) and so are private ones (90 chf per person or 120 chf per couple, per hour). All levels are taught.

Bar Rouge near the Messe in Basel, reopening for salsa on March 12th, 10pm. Free if you are over 35.

The best way to progress is to actually go out there and dive in! You can dance almost every night in the Basel area.

On Tuesday, you can go to Kuppel near the Basel Zoo, for the weekly "Salsaloca" (entrance is just 5 chf- DJ Samy), right after a beginners' class on the premises.
On Wednesdays you can head to the Blotzheim casino in France (nice, big smoke-free dance floor) with free initiation starting at 8pm (5 euros with casino card of 7 euros otherwise, includes a drink).
On Wednesdays also, Fame in Basel has a Latinissima night.
On Thursdays the Allegra (at the Hilton Hotel in Basel) hosts Salsa Nacht.
On Fridays (except Feb.20th-March 19th: closed for renovation, reopening March 26th), Bar Rouge near the Messe in Basel has a Salsa versus Disco night (free for anyone over 35)
On Sundays, the Unternehmen Mitte near Barfüsserplatz in Basel has a salsa night every other Sunday (alternating with tango).
Also in Germany, just an hour train ride away, the Palladium in Freiburg offers salsa nights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. (http://www.palladium-freiburg.de/)

Many of the salsa venues have facebook pages which will allow you to receive reminders and invitations to numerous events when joining the groups. Also you can see some videos on You Tube taken during the Salsameneo lessons.

Yes it is not easy starting a new dance, but with a bit of passion and fun, it's possible...Remember... every great dancer was a beginner once....

EasterTango 2010 in Basel: A date marked clearly in the diaries of numerous tango dancers. Once again we welcome tango fans from all over the world. This year, every teaching couple will run a 3-day seminar on a particular theme, as well as teaching the workshops; and before every event, there will be a practica.

Cantate Basel heralds the spring and with it love; the recipe for which is a solo-quartet, two horns, a harp, and a piano together with the twenty-four members of the Cantate choir. The evening programme is centred on the love songs composed by the first director of the Basel Conservatorium, Hans Huber, who has his roots in German Romantic music. Amongst a variety of other composers, there will also be the Liebeslieder of Johannes Brahms, and the Spanish Liederspiel from Robert Schumann.

Saturday 24 April at 19:30 & Sunday 25^th April at 19.30.

Kieran Gross and Karan Casey will be playing at the Kammgarn in Schaffhausen Friday April 23rd. Karan fronted the group Solas in the 90's. Tickets are 35 / CHF 30 at the door and are also available at starticket. Doors open at 20:15, concert begins at 21:00.

Cartoon Museum Paints it Black: "Noir" Scraperboard Technique

The Cartoonmuseum Basel is presenting a new exhibit from February 12 to June 20, 2010 featuring the unique art of the Scraperboard, a study in visual contrast. The Vernissage-opening is Friday February 12 at 6 p.m and all are welcome. The exhibition- Kontrastprogram- brings a dark art to light. The scraperboard is a piece of white board covered with a layer of black ink. The artist then exposes the white beneath the black. Many notable artists have used it for portraits, caricatures and illustrations that playfully exploit the drama and contrasts which result.

The exhibit highlights the more than 100 years of this technique featuring related woodblock print techniques , cartoons, comics and illustrations by European virtuosos. During the exhibitions run, there will be workshops and demonstrations.
