‘Wüstenbuch’ (Book of the Dessert), a new composition for Musical Theater
2010.3.16 & 17. ‘Wüstenbuch’ (Book of the Dessert), a new composition for Musical Theater
The sounds of this new composition by Swiss composer Beat Fürrer carry us on dessert winds, across a landscape of emptiness and loneliness. Beat Fürrer and the librettist Händl Klaus have developed the text from various sources, including a new translation of the ancient Egyptian Papyrus Berlin 3024 by Jan Assman, and Ingeborg Bachmann’s ‘Dessert-book Fragments’.
The performance presents a unique opportunity to see Beat Fürrer’s Musical Theatre composition staged by the renowned Swiss director Christoph Marthaler. The staging transports us from the dessert to empty hotel rooms, where the theme of loneliness and anonymity is paramount in the fleeting emotionless contact between the protagonists. There are some startling musical effects, where seemingly disembodied voices sing out from around the stage, and the soloist’s voice merges with the instrument, conjuring up an eerie glimpse into the afterlife.
Performing for three nights only from Monday 15th to Wednesday 17th March at the Basel Musical Theatre (Tram 1 or 14 to Musical Theater). Thereafter it goes on tour to Berlin.
