Twilight: New Moon
Vampires rule, what's all the fuss about Twilight: New Moon? If you've been awake you've probably noticed a cultural obsession with fangs and an increase in the number of androgenous pale people with strangely sharp teeth wandering around town and on your movie screens. Stephanie Meyer's brought to the cinema world young vampires and sold 70 million books. Just what is it that explains the vampires appeal? Hs it something to do with procreation, I wonder? Vampires are usually depicted as tall and handsome: a combination that signals good genes and high testosterone. Whats more these days they are the new fashion victims, often well-dressed and therefore sort of ironically healthy looking and powerful, indicating access to valuable resources. The fact that vampires are novel creatures and dangerous adds to their attration. In psychological terms, things that are new and unpredictable to us activate the brain's reward system drawing up dopamine and inducing feelings of euphoria. Enter the unsuspecting sweet mortal, everywoman, plane jane and the stage is set for that classic romance: forbidden love.
